Sunday, May 16, 2010 - Overcast skies, a 50 degree air temperature, and mid-60 degree water temperatures awaited the 150 entrants of the 2010 Parkside Aquatic Mile sponsored by the San Mateo Master Marlins. The first Pacific Masters Swimming (PMS) open water race of the 2010 season came off without a hitch.
Again this year, an all-electronic timing system was used. Small waterproof radio-frequency transponders were attached with Velcro fasteners to each swimmer's ankle. A sensor at the finish line recorded the race number and time as each swimmer ran or walked across the finish line with an assuring "beep." The system utilized this year was provided by Big Sky Endurance Sports of Reno, Nevada. Big Sky provides timing and place-finishing services for triathlons, running events, open-water swimming, biathlons, mountain biking, road racing, paddle board events, Nordic skiing, and even multiple events simultaneously. Owners Scott Muir and Karen LeFebre were on hand and managed the system that produced printed and electronic results as soon as the final swimmer crossed the finish line.
