Lane Etiquette 101:

• Please set yourself in the appropriate lanes

• Please be aware of variable intervals for your lane mates

• If you are resting or sitting out, do not be in the middle of the lane

• If you are passing, do not do so at the turn

• Changing the interval is OK...changing the set, is not OK
   (Lap swimming is always available)

Bridge to Bridge Swim

By Randy Brown

Golden Gate Bridge

Bob Roper organized a Golden Gate Bridge to Bay Bridge swim race for Sunday, July 11, 2010.  Joel Swartz, Hank Stern, and I had the privilege of doing the test swim on Saturday, July 10.  This involved going with the flood tide which meant a 4 a.m. wake-up time for me both days.

When the red buoy started leaning towards the Golden Gate we jumped in and headed for the Bay Bridge.  I wholeheartedly recommend you experience the joy of doing backstroke under the Golden Gate Bridge.  The view from water level of the Marina, city skyline and piers was awe inspiring.  The three of us stayed together the whole time.  Joel and I synchronized our strokes so that occasionally our fingertips touched.  With Joel breathing to the right and me to the left we were constantly smiling at each other.

On Sunday, Joel did a great job of directing the swimmers from the Lovely Martha, a charter fishing vessel.  Because Bob Roper trusted your Kai Kane (man of the sea), I was asked to guide in the lead swimmers.  Thank you Nancy Littlefield for generously loaning me your kayak!  The youngsters were given a head-start so three girls took the early lead.  As Alexa T. began to separate herself from two of the girls, her father graciously agreed to stay with them.  Alexa, a 17-year-old St. Francis high school swimmer, maintained the lead throughout the race with just two men eventually passing her at about the Ferry Building.

Just a side note.  My father died on July 11, 2007.  We passed under the Golden Gate over a 100 times in his Grand Banks on fishing trips.  There is a Grand Banks behind Hank Stern on the fake cover of our Swimming World Magazine.  It is very encouraging to have my Dad still showing up when I need him.

Here are some pictures of the swim from Hank Stern's Snapfish album:
