About Us

Marlin

The San Mateo Master Marlins swim team has about 160 members who participate in any of 24 scheduled workouts throughout the week.  Our new home pool is in the San Mateo Athletic Club (SMAC) located in the Health & Wellness Building (Bldg. 5) on the Campus of College of San Mateo, 1700 W. Hillsdale Boulevard, San Mateo, CA 94402.  CLICK HERE for the campus map and parking regulations.  The San Mateo Master Marlins is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) (non-profit) corporation.  We have by-laws, election of committee members and officers, and regular committee mettings.  For more information, see our Swim Committee page.

SMAC is a brand new, state-of-the-art facility consisting of a 14,000 square foot fitness center and two outdoor pools.  The main Olympic Pool is 25 yards by 50 meters (kept at a target temperature of 78 to 80° F) and the Instructional Pool is 25 yards long and 6 lanes wide (kept at a target temperature of 86 to 88° F).  We hold workout sessions 12-months a year.  Our team members range in age from 19 to 93!  Many of the Marlin team members compete in both pool and open water Masters events throughout the year.

Interested in other types of organized swimming activities?  SMAC now offers both private and semi-private Swim Lessons, an Adult Swim for Fitness Class and Masters Water Polo.

The San Mateo Master Marlins was founded in 1972 by Hall of Fame swimmer Raymond F. Taft.

CLICK HERE to read a 2-page bio on Ray (written in 1988).

Ray received numerous honors, awards, and tributes both during and after his lifetime.  The most fitting acknowledgment of the way that Ray touched our lives was in the obituary written by Marlin swimmer and San Francisco Chronicle reporter, Mark Simon.  CLICK HERE to read Mark's article taken from the Tuesday, July 23, 2002 edition of the Chronicle.

The Joinville Swim Center, our home for nearly 40 years, was opened on October 5, 1968, and was named in honor of the only San Mateo Police Officer to loose his life in the line of duty, Gordon R. Joinville.  He was a 12-year veteran and left behind a wife and two small children.  Detective Sergeant Joinville was shot and killed on May 23, 1968, while investigating the procurement of a large amount of chemicals used in the production of LSD.  The suspect, age 32 at the time, was apprehended within two days, convicted, and died at age 68 while serving a life sentence in the California prison system.
